I haven't been meaning to ignore our blog, it's just that nothing super exciting has been going on in the Johnson household since Thanksgiving. At least nothing picture worthy. I don't think you all need to see photos of the fact that I've been sick for an entire week.
However, TOMORROW we are decorating the Johnson house for Christmas and I could not be more excited! Some of you may foo foo me and say that I am diminishing Thanksgiving. Not so! I actually love Thanksgiving! We are going to be gone all next weekend up north with Jed's family in Wisconsin and I want to have the tree up before we leave so we can enjoy it for longer! I am so excited to celebrate our first Christmas together in our home and start all kinds of fun traditions as a family. Check back tomorrow!

Fabulous Florida Roadtrip!

A few months ago, Jed and I planned to head down to sunny Florida to visit Emily and Bud and new baby Claire after she was born. It ended up working out perfectly thanks to conferences comp day last Friday. I only had to take 1 personal day to make the trip. We set out Wednesday night after work after picking up our fabulous rental. I really wish I had gotten a picture of this gem but here's one I found on the internets to help you all visualize the details of this trip:
Anyway, like Jed said, our drive was quite long. I'm convinced Missouri is the worst state ever (no offense to any Missourianites) but Jed got to drive through Mississippi while I slept from about 3-5:30 which he claims is way worse than Missouri. We DID make it to Florida. We got a tad lost when we were just about 40 miles away. Blast! But we got turned around and made it in one piece around 1 PM on Thursday.

We hung out for a little while at Bud and Emily's and then when we could check into our hotel in Niceville, we headed that way and totally crashed for almost 3 hours. We were TIRRRED. We headed back over to the Thomas' and did some more of this:



We watched some TV and then headed back to the hotel for more sleeping. Friday morning, we went back to the Thomas' for a fun Florida day! The weather was so gorgeous! We went to a Gator land to see some alligators, per Jed's request since he's obsessed with the History Channel's best show, SWAMP PEOPLE, hit the beach in Destin and grabbed lunch at a cool Irish pub. It was such a great day! Here are some of my favorite shots of the day:

Friday night, we watched a movie and my mom made boneless bbq ribs and cheesy potatoes. YUMMMM!!!
Saturday, we tried to get some good pics of Claire bear for her birth announcements. She was just SO darn sleepy but we got a few good ones! The camera just loves her. :)


Then it was time for one more picture of Uncle Jed, Aunt Sarah and baby Claire and we had to head back north...
The return trip, though we took a different route, was just as long. So long, in fact, that I didn't think we could make it driving through the night so we decided to stop and stay Saturday night in Nashville at a sketchy Comfort Inn and drive the rest of the way Sunday. The only saving grace of the drive on Sunday was a newfound love for season 1 of Friday Night Lights. We are hooked.
All in all, it was a really great trip and a memory that we'll always remember. I'm not sure that too many LONG road trips are in our future but we could definitely do it again if we needed to. Plus, it was TOTALLY worth it to meet sweet Claire. I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Jed strikes again

If we've learned anything from a seventeen hour road trip, it's this. When you arrive in a state (Florida) that has seventy degree temperatures and sunshine, it's worth the three hour drive through desolate Mississippi (a state we're avoiding on the return trip). I'd add some pictures, but I've decided to let your imaginations run wild. I'm pretty convinced that the only reason Mississippi exists is to give truckers another state that they can tell other truckers they drove through. Seriously though, who designs an interstate that has three exits over a 200 mile stretch? When none of them are rest stops? I mean, not that I'd have wanted to stop at any if there were, as all I saw in the state was a van from California that would literally pass us at 100 miles per hour, only to be pulled over on the side of the road in 10 miles and then to pass us again 10 min later. At this point, I'm pretty conviced that the driver was either suffering from narcolepsy or would become paralyzed with fear from the dead werewolf looking things and the pieces of blown tires on the side of the road. I mean, I could have imagined all of this as it did mark my 22nd hour of being awake, but I'm pretty convinced that both of them were real. As for the driver in the van from California, I'm pretty convinced, based upon stops and starts, had a pretty serious love/hate relationship with the state.

Back to the point. This marks my first ever trip to Florida, and however brief, certainly was worth the hype. Everyone drives just as crazy as I thought they would, there are alligators and the Chevy HHR is the most poorly designed vehicle I've ever encountered. The most import thing that I've learned though, is that newborn babies do the same thing, no matter the state or time of day. They even seem to be oblivious of weather changes, temperature or anything that you may be saying to them... They are cute though, whether they're pooping or not.

Can't wait for the trip back. Hopefully, we'll have a few more dead werewolf sightings and be able to grab a picture this time. Also, we've figured out how to work the sweet back wiper that cleans almost half the window.... As of now, it looks like we'll still be married when we get back :)

Oh. My. Goodness.

I stole these pictures from facebook from one of Emily's friends that they went to the pumpkin patch with today. Is that creepy? I don't even care. I had to! My niece is so cute! I'm so jealous that my mom is already there. She has sent me a total of at least 10 picture texts since she got there THIS AFTERNOON. She's one proud Grandma. Look at how cute she is:

Aunt Sarah and Uncle Jed! (Again!)

Now that Emily has updated her blog, I can finally share my EXTREME, border-line crazy enthusiasm about our new niece who was born on Monday! She's a little Florida baby and her name is Claire Elizabeth. Here is a picture of her...
I may be SLIGHTLY biased but I think she is totally perfect and incredibly beautiful! Emily was a real trooper, especially the last 3 weeks of her pregnancy. Claire was finally 'evicted' and came into the world weighing 8 lb 13 0z. YIKES. But, look at that face! So precious. Here's another precious photog...
Jed and I are going to visit in Florida next week and I could not be more excited (for 2 days off school). I'm looking forward to quality time with my husband, and meeting my precious niece. And it's Florida... shucks! :)

This is fall?

We have had some really warm weather for October! I am not trying to complain, I am just really wanting to wear sweatshirts and sweaters and switch my wardrobe out and reorganize my closet! :)

Last Sunday it was particularly beautiful. We headed to Ames with Eric and Kelli for a fun afternoon! We started out at Black Market Pizza to enjoy some grub. We watched the "Des Moines" episode of Man Vs. Food on the Travel channel and it highlighted this pizza joint for it's fancy specialty pizza pies. Here is a link to the guide for the Des Moines episode. The pizza was really fabulous!

Then we headed to a disc golf course near ISU. It was Kelli's and my first time disc golfing. I'd say our skills were... terrible. The boys had some good laughs at a few of our tosses. It was just a fun day to enjoy outside!

Fall Craft!

I love, love, LOVE fall. The colors, the smells, the crunch of leaves beneath your feet... etc. I got this idea for a fall craft from my friend Jill's roommate, Jane's blog. Jane, I will admit, I kind of stalk your blog for craft ideas!
I had bought lots of styrofoam wreaths and felt for center pieces for the wedding. I took an extra one, bought some pretty yellow-ish yarn, wrapped it around the wreath (that took FOR.EV.ER), and then took some of the felt circles from the wedding center pieces and stuck them on there with pins. Jed is bothered by the fact that it's not symmetrical, but I think it's fun. :)
[Can I just say, I love my front door. It's one of my favorite parts of the house.]


And here's a really pretty shot of the tree in our front yard! I am NOT looking forward to raking all of those leaves but... it's pretty to look at for now!
